Your one-pot hot dog pasta from a Brazilian

Do you know those days when you simply don’t feel like cooking? Those days you just wish a delicious dish would cook itself for you?

Well, this one-pot hot dog pasta won’t cook itself, but it is straightforward to make that you will love it!

While the famous threaded hot dog spaghetti is also an easy recipe to follow, today’s pasta dish is even easier! In short, it’s your perfect lazy dinner!

For what it’s worth, we call this dish macarrão com salsicha in Brazil, and while it isn’t one of the most traditional Brazilian dishes, it was a fundamental part of my childhood–we had it all the time.

Besides, as you might have noticed, this hot dog pasta is also a children’s favorite. So let’s get to it.

What you will need for this hot dog pasta:

  • Onion and garlic of a delicious Brazilian sofrito
  • Hotdogs
  • Whole milk – some people use heavy cream, but we have always used whole milk at home.
  • Tomato sauce
  • Penne pasta
  • Bouillon cube – I prefer the beef bouillon cube
  • Parmesan cheese – Lots of it!
  • Olive oil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper

Tips for preparing a delicious hot dog pasta

  • If you want to add a little more flavor to it, use Hillshire sausage instead of hotdogs.
  • You can add a little Parmesan cheese while cooking. I have seen some people add cheddar cheese instead, but I’ve never tried it myself.

Pssst: Kids (and adults) usually love this Brazilian lemonade!

How to make an easy hot dog pasta

In a medium saucepan, saute the onion in olive oil until translucent over medium heat. Then, saute the minced garlic for a further minute.

Alternatively, you can use this delicious Brazilian sofrito recipe.

Add the hot dog pieces and mix it well. Next, add the whole milk and tomato pasta sauce and stir it until incorporated.

Add the uncooked penne pasta and beef broth/bouillon cube and mix it well until the liquid covers all the pasta.

Add the Italian seasoning, salt and pepper to taste.

Lower the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes or until the pasta has soaked most of the liquid.

Stir every 5 minutes so that the pasta will not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Turn off the heat, and let it sit for about 5 minutes with the pan closed.

Serve with parmesan cheese to taste. Alternatively, you can make a cheese sauce by adding the cheese to the pan while simmering.

Enjoy!
