Easy sardine dip for any occasion

Have canned sardines in your pantry? Then you’re halfway from having a delicious dip for an appetizer.

After preparing a mouth-watering sardine pie, I decided to use some more of the canned sardines we had in a quick dip recipe–you’ll only need a few ingredients.

After all, these fish are an excellent source of fatty acids (marine Omega-3), which is good to prevent heart disease and lower blood pressure, and vitamin D, which helps to strengthen bones and muscles.[1,2]

In other words, sardines are healthy as they’re packed with essential nutrients and make up for delicious dishes and snacks.[3]

What to serve with your sardine dip:

  • Cracker
  • Bread
  • Celery stick
  • Cucumber
  • Cherry tomato
  • Red bell pepper
  • Alternatively, you could make a platter with healthy snacks, such as green, yellow, and red bell pepper and tomato, as mentioned above, and other raw vegetables such as carrots, radish, etc.
  • Baguettes slices – You can also serve it as a spread. However, I prefer this sardine pate for that.

How to make a sardine dip

For this recipe, I’ve used the canned fish, however, if you have fresh sardines, that’s also fine!

Transfer the sardines to a small bowl. Using a small, sharp knife, carefully open each one down the belly and back, folding them open to expose the backbone. Remove and discard the bones. Cutaway and discard any tails.

Transfer the sardines to a medium bowl and mash them with a fork until smooth.

Add the cream cheese, onion, garlic, and herbs. Mix well until smooth.

Add the lemon juice as well as salt and pepper to taste and mix it until incorporated. For reference, three tablespoons of fresh lemon juice equal about one fruit.

Instead of mixing everything with a fork, you can use a food processor if you prefer your sardine dip smoother than it already is.

For the photos of this recipe, I didn’t use a food processor, and the result is was some tasty bites.

Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and serve it with vegetables or pieces of your favorite bread. Enjoy!
